Back To School BASH!

Week 1: Classroom Set Up & Organization

We are so, SO happy to be linking up, with so many new friends, to share our Back to School ideas!!!

Tricia & I have been team teaching 1-2 multi-agers together for 16 years...we're starting our 17th  year together this school year! So we have tried many, MANY classroom set-ups but one thing that's always been the same is, we have student tables (not desks) and we teach small groups from a table so we do not use a teacher desk.
So welcome to our "Happy Hearts Classroom"! We like to make our classroom very safe, fun, and happy...a place our students love and want to be.♥♥♥ (Some of these photos are older, as we are in the middle of putting our room back together right now. We will post another Classroom Tour in late August.☺)
We keep our weekly read alouds and printables in a drawer organizer that is labeled with the days of the week. Books for Home & Backs are kept in labeled & leveled baskets. (We use Reading From A to Z books for Home & Back Baggies.). They travel to/from school in a sturdy ziplock baggy with a parent note and reading log.
We have monthly tubs for thematic activities and props. And just last summer, we started keeping monthly notebooks & subject area notebooks to keep all of our TPT printables organized in...SO MUCH BETTER THAN A FILE CABINET!!!☺

We have cubbies/mailboxes for each student to keep their supplies in: crayon baggies, homework folders, bulletins, etc. We keep a "Sub Tub" ready to go in case we are both ever gone on the same never gets used, Ha! We don't get subs. It's just easier to teach all 49 without having to explain all day what someone else needs to be doing. After all these years, we're like a little (old) well oiled machine. We like to keep a tub of clipboards for students that like to spread out on the floor while they are working. And they are often used for Literacy Stations and Math Tubs too! Our little rainbow colored pocket chart is magnetic and can separate into 4 charts. We use this one for our Monthly Word Walls...we have one for each month FREE in our store if you haven't seen them!

Back when we had 40-42 students, we had 10 student tables but for the last 5-7 years, we've had 47-50. Soooo we now have 11 student tables and then one computer table where students rotate throughout the day for IREAD. This is a district mandated program we have to use in our classroom. We just purchased Mel & Deanna's Scrappy Decor Packet and WE LOVE IT!!! We already had SO many scrappy friends in our room but we can NEVER have enough. We got the calendar printed, laminated, and posted this week.☺
We have numbers with 10 ten frames and number words to 20 posted. And our word wall goes with our Funky Phonics program. Each letter has a motion that goes with the picture! We start with a blank word wall every year and add 10-20 words a week...because we are multi-age, we add more than just 1st or 2nd. And we have MANY different word walls (not just a sight word one). One thing we added last year, was this little write & wipe calendar! It's GREAT...we keep our Specials rotation and any events for our students to read throughout the week.

We have Leveled Book Tubs: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, & chapter books
These are for students to check out books for Read to Self and Read to Someone during Daily 5. We also have Thematic Book Tubs for them to check out too! AND they check-out 3 library books each week: 1 fiction & 2 non-fiction.☺

We have many bulletin boards in our room and we are working on changing the backgrounds from non-fade bulletin board paper to material...summer project!
The red board is our Happy Birthday Board and we will be using our Scrappy Decor Packet for that one.
The blue one is for our Funky Phonics short vowels. We will add Word Families as we introduce them throughout the first few months of school.
The purple one has our Reading Strategies posted. We also have these on a ring that we keep at grouptime and at our small group tables.
The pink one is for our Daily 5 Procedures. We add onto this with our students as we model and practice our procedures during the first two of weeks.
The orange one is for long vowel words with silent e...another Funky Phonics Unit!

Each table has 3 labeled baskets on a shelf near their table. They use these baskets to organize their  journals, work folders, picture dictionaries, fluency folders, copy keepers, and words we use when we write books.
Our rainbow colored baskets are used for Literacy Stations. Students can take the basket back to their seat or find a spot on the floor to work. (We also keep dictionaries, basal readers, and magazines on each shelf.)
The tubs with the blue lids are Math Tubs. Same with these tubs but they can only do Math Tubs during our Math Block.

We just bought this super bright and fun garland this's hanging across all of our windows (That's A LOT of garland)!!! We bought it from Hobby Lobby...several trips and using our 40% off QR Coupon Code each time, LOL.
We made our Leader Necklaces last year but changed them into badges. So they are "Brag Badges" now! So much easier to keep together. (The necklaces were always breaking.) We keep these clipped onto the cord that hangs down from our blinds.
We have 2 doors because we have a double-open room. We have our 2 favorite quotes on them with glitter letters, scrappy kids, and polka dots...ALL THINGS HAPPY!!!☺
We keep all kinds of pointers in our room. This little bucket is one we painted YEARS ago. We just can't get rid of it. Almost 15 years ago, we hand painted and shipped Read the Room buckets with pointers all over the country...Can you say CRA-ZY??? (We were SO YOUNG!!!)

All of these word walls and anchor charts come down over the summer. We post them as we introduce new skills and refer to them all throughout the school year. We use every space we can find, cabinet doors, and any blank wall space that is eye level for our students. The ones shown here are more cards & charts from our Funky Phonics Units.

Our Interactive Alphabet

We originally started making our Interactive Alphabet to help our struggling learners...
you know, the ones who need that little extra help, time, and repetition as they are learning new concepts and skills.

We often feel SO bad for these kiddos. We see them working very hard to understand but it just takes them a little longer than others.
This always makes us think of the book Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus.
We LOVE this book!!!

As we started to think about the activities we wanted to include in our Interactive Alphabet, we tried some out with our 1-2 multi-age sweeties. They absolutely LOVED working on these activities as they reviewed and practiced mastering alphabet sounds. We also wanted to make multi-level and engaging activities that would make learning fun. So while our students were working on learning alphabet sounds A-Z, they were also reading, writing, & spelling with these activities!

Here is our Letter Bb packet. This can be download for FREE over in our TPT store!

This is our Letter Bb mini-book. Students trace and read words that begin with the letter b. Then they trace, color, and cut their book which also helps them develop their fine motor skills! This is an 8 page book that can be copied double sided. We actually like to put this in our Literacy Stations with magnetic letters so our students can build the words as they make their books!

Next is our Letter b Search & Find. Our students LOVE this one! They sound out each picture and color it if it begins with the letter b: /b/, /b/, /b/. They leave the other pictures white. But we do have them color the background of the letter and the boy or girl that is on each page!

Here is our Letter b Poem. Students trace the poem, the BIG letter b, and color the picture.
We put this in Literacy Stations too:
we either use a sand tray or a gel baggy so our kiddos can practice making the letter b when they finish their poem.

Ok, our kiddos LOVE any activity that includes using a spinner!!! So easy, a pencil & a paperclip... something EVERY teacher has! We often do spinner activities with partners. They take turns spinning and coloring the upper and lower case letter B/bs. (Again, we like to make learning FUN!)

Al-most every 1st & most 2nd graders need to practice and improve their handwriting skills. So this was a MUST for this packet! We used our Letter b poem again but this time they trace and then write their own upper/lower case letter B/bs. We really like this page because they can compare their independent writing with the tracing they did first. Then writing the "b words" at the bottom gives them a little more reading & spelling practice!

We have been clapping syllable with kiddos for 23 LOVE clapping, really anything they can do that involves MOVING and making noise while learning, Ha!

Bingo daubers are also another favorite resource in our classroom! We do have our students color all of the pictures FIRST and then "DOT" only the pics that begin with the letter b. This is another great one we put into our Literacy Stations.

More tracing, coloring, & cutting with our Flip-Flap Fun activity! After they complete this one, we have them read their flip-flaps to a friend;) They LOVE to do this!

Finally, our Letter Bb crown...a BIG TIME favorite! Our students make their crowns and wear them all day. They are SO proud when talking about their crowns. And LOVE reading their "b words" to anyone around our school.☺

Our Interactive Alphabet: Letters Aa-Zz is available in a Growing Bundle. The price will increase as the bundle grows but you will ALWAYS save by purchasing the bundle! We are still teachers in the classroom and we know how much WE appreciate sellers putting products into bundles so we can save a little while shopping on TPT!

You can click the pic to check out our Interactive Alphabet Growing Bundle in our TPT store.

If you are interested, the Handwriting Poems that we used in our bundle, they are also available separately in a packet in our store. We have these printed onto cardstock and laminated but also use them on our Smartboard in our classroom. We let our students "Skywrite" with their invisible pencils or sometimes we partner up to write on each others backs when practicing our Handwriting Poems with our Smartboard!

Thanks so much for stopping by friends! TTFN♥♥♥

TPT Vegas 2015♥♥♥

TPT Team + Teachers = Brilliant Inspiration
TPT Vegas 2016 was truly an invaluable experience!!!
We are so blessed & thankful that we were able to attend again this year.
We met countless teachers and TPT members that were genuine to the core. Each person we talked to really listened and had powerful information and experiences to share.

Our sessions & presenters were jaw-dropping, encouraging, funny, inspiring, & even mind-boggling! We learned SO much more this year and now have many new ideas to help us grow as individuals, teachers, partners, & business teacherprenuers.

There were many moments we had tears in our eyes, chill bumps going down our spines, & flutters in our hearts. We honestly feel that we have made connections and friendships that will continue to grow and bond as we GO FURTHER TOGETHER!!!

Flat Abby AKA Babbling Abby from the Inspired Apple was our VERY FIRST blogger inspiration!!! So when we decided to take another "Flat Friend" with us this year, she was next on our list. We are SO happy that she was willing to have fun with us! We met so many teachers & friends of Abby's  that love and are also inspired by her. Thank you Abby...we adore you and can't WAIT to meet, hug, talk, laugh, & hug some more next year!♥♥♥

Below is my first attempt at using Picmonkey...thank you Deedee Wills & Deanna Jump for sharing this in your session! I seriously saved SO much time using this!!!
And thank you to everyone that stopped for a picture with us. We had the BEST time and we are already counting down for TPT Vegas 2016...
I wonder what "Flat Friend" will be coming with us next year, hmmmm???

Reflecting...2014-2015 School Year

 This was our 16th year team-teaching 1-2 Multi-Agers together!
Our classroom got a wall knocked out over the summer so we were back in a
Double Open Classroom...
SO THANKFUL that this was able to happen!!!
(Being in one room the year before with 49 kiddos was a HUGE CHALLENGE to say the least!)
We like to stay organized and we are constantly coming up with new ideas to help us.
We made mini-anchor chart stands over the summer break. This is where we keep our spelling words posted each week. Our kiddos know they can use these as a reference as they work on their Funky Phonics activities throughout the week.
We have labeled book tubs ALL OVER our room. Some are leveled and some are organized by theme. Our students use these to check out books for Read To Self & Read To Someone.
We also have baskets for each table to keep their supplies, journals, folders, &  work organized in. Each student has a book tub and a copy keeper on their shelf too.
We made the drawer organizer for our weeks plans: games, printables, read alouds, mini anchor charts, etc. are kept here!
We have always used Small Group Tables in our classroom...NO TEACHER DESKS. We pull Reading & Math Groups as well as individuals for One-On-One Teacher Time:
writing conferences, data folder updates, assessments, fluency check-ups, etc.
The rest of our pictures are just a few highlights from each month of our school year.
We hope you enjoy them!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by...we hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and come back soon to visit and see what we're up to as we get ready for Year 17 Together!!!
PS We have a Blog Makeover in the works and cannot WAIT to have our BIG REVEAL...
we are hoping it will be ready before school starts.
We will be celebrating with a fun Giveaway, SOOOOO keep in touch friends! TTFN♥♥♥
