Shared Reading Strategy

One of our favorite Shared Reading Strategies is making
Comprehension Charts!
We record and add onto our chart each day as we read and reread our
Shared Reading story or text throughout the week.

This example shows a Comprehension Chart we created
while reading Jake Baked the Cake by B.G. Hennessy with our 1-2 multi-agers.

Comprehension Chart Components
Title: Story or Text
Before/During/After Reading: student's comments &/or questions
Vocabulary: words from the text that you discuss or clarify with students
Connections: student's responses to connections between the text and their experiences
Rhyming: or any other special words that may be in the text
ex. compound words, nouns, verbs, adjectives,
or any skill you want to focus on throughout your study
Other:For Jake Baked the Cake, we put community helpers in this section.

Our students refer to our charts as they work on many literacy assignments throughout the week.
They also use them when they work on their culminating activities.

Culminating Activity
For Jake Baked the Cake, our students created Group Posters.
They drew and colored Jake. Then recorded the Main Idea on cakes created out of construction paper.
Each layer of cake was a different color.
Our students wrote a different part of the Main Idea on each layer:
Who?
Did What?
When?
Where?
Why?
Then our groups decorated their cakes with foam shapes, sequins, and gems!

This was such a FUN and ENGAGING activity.
Our students were excited, motivated, involved, & used team work.
They showed great pride in their work
as they stood up together and presented their posters to their friends!!!

We hope this post has inspired you and given you a new idea to use during
Shared Reading with your class!
Thanks so much for stopping by~

Tuesday: Word Sort
We practice the words & motions again on Tuesday.
We review the sorting rule for the week and discuss how to set up our paper
for the groups they will be making.
Then our students work in their table groups on their word sorts.

Wednesday: Color Code
After reviewing our cards & motions again on Wednesday,
our students use our Color Code Anchor Charts while they work
on their color code pages independently. (This one is copied front/back each week.)

Thursday: Mini-Booklet
Once again, we review our cards & motions
before our students complete their mini-booklets!
They put these in their mailboxes and take them home every Thursday.

Friday: Spelling Test
After moving & grooving with our words & motions all week,
it's finally time to see how our kiddos can apply their new words!
They turn in their homework on Friday mornings. Then we take our spelling test.
They are in sentence format and focus on the 10 words, handwriting, and grammar.
Before we created Funky Phonics, we used spelling tests that
were just a list of words, Our students always struggled with applying
capitals & punctuation in their everyday writing. Now it is amazing to see how
easily they start applying these skills on a daily basis!
And the improvement in their handwriting is truly AWESOME!
After we take our spelling test, we add our new words to our Word Walls
and we play word wall games...Funky Phonics makes learning FUN!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!☺
We hope you've enjoyed reading & learning about our Funky Phonics
curriculum. If you have any questions, feel free to comment and we will
do our best to get back with you as quick as we can!

Making Mental Images With Isabella

Today we are sharing an idea & a FREEBIE!!!

A few weeks ago, we introduced
Mental Images & Visualizing to our class of 1-2 multi-agers.

First, we discussed our Mental Images Poster.
This really helped our students understand what mental images are.

We read the book, My Name Is Not Isabella...
Written By Jennifer Fosberry and Illustrated By Mike Litwin.

This was the PERFECT book for the beginning of the year as we were still working on our
Getting To Know You and All About Me activities!!!

Throughout this book, Isabella dreams of being many famous women leaders of our past.
The beautiful illustrations show how Isabella visualizes being these leaders.

It all starts when her mother goes in to wake her up for school...

She says that she is Sally Ride...

 Annie Oakley...

Rosa Parks...

 Marie Curie...

Finally, at the end of the day, Isabella says that she is "Mommy" (so, so sweet) as she falls asleep
to dream about who she will be tomorrow.

We all have dreams...what are yours?

After reading our book, discussing, and introducing our reading strategy poster,
we did Think-Pair-Share to help our students make their Mental Images in their minds.

Our students closed their eyes for 1 minute. They thought about & visualized
who they would like to be when they grow up.
(We used our timer for this activity.☺)
Then they opened their eyes and paired up with a shoulder partner next to them.
Partner 1 shared first about what they visualized, while Partner 2 listened. (1 min.)
Then Partner 2 shared about what they visualized, while Partner 1 listened. (1 min.)
Then we had some whole group sharing to discuss and encourage more details.

Then our students went to work at their tables.
They drew pictures of their Mental Images and wrote who they want to be when they grow up!

As you can see this activity is VERY multi-level...your students can just draw or draw & write!

If you would like to use our printables with your students,
