Piggyback Books From The Past

Throwback Thursday!!!

We thought we dig out some old class books that we have piggybacked with our classes in the past...we hope you like them and maybe they will inspire you to make some fun books with your class!
We love, love, love looking back at students' work and thinking about the students we've had.♥♥♥

The Very Hungry Tadpole (2001)
Adapted From: The Very Hungry Caterpillar By Eric Carle
Our students retold this story using their own words and changed the main character to a tadpole. Their tadpole changed into a frog in the end! We let them illustrate the book using construction paper. We printed the text and they glued it to their page.

Mr. Zooey-Looey (2008)
Adapted From: Mrs. Wishy-Washy By Joy Cawely
During our Animal Unit our students created their own version of Mrs. Wishy-Washy. We published their story as they retold using their own words. Then illustrated directly on the page using pencils and crayons.

Ecology and the Environment (1997)
Adapted From: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
By Rozanne Lancak Williams
This text can be read to the tune of: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
Think Earth, Think Earth
Is Our Song
Everyone should sing along.
After teaching our students this song,
we charted ways to help save our Earth.
Examples...help recycle all you can, turn off the water, and the fan
We wrote the text on construction paper.
Then they drew and colored the illustrations.

Who Lives Here? (2001)
Adapted From: Who Lives Here? By
This one is a Pop-Up Book!
Each child started with a sheet on construction paper folded in
half and the pop up tab was precut.
We printed the writing frame and they glued it to the outside.
Then they drew the habitat for their animal on the inside of their construction paper page. Next they  made their animal on cardstock and glued it to the pop up tab.
Finally they wrote their answer on the inside.

A House Is A House For Me (2006)
Adapted From: A House Is A House For Me
By Mary Ann Hoberman
This is a very simple one...
After reading A House Is A House For Me, we charted other things that can be houses for things. This is so much fun!!!
Our kiddos get very creative. They completed their writing frame and then illustrated their pictures with drawings.
Then we printed a cover!

Mrs. Srubby-Dubby (2000)
Adpated From: Mrs. Wishy-Washy By Joy Cawley
Every year during our Farm Unit, our kiddos fall in love with Mrs. Wishy-Washy. We piggybacked this favorite by making Mrs. Scrubby-Dubby. Our class retold this story in their own words. We wrote the text with a sharpie onto large construction paper and our students drew the pictures.

Because a Little Dragonfly Sneezed (2001)
Adapted From: Because a Little Bug Went Kachoo!
By Rosetta Stone
After reading Because A lIttle Bug Went Kachoo! We discussed and charted all of the Cause and Effect events. Then our students retold the story using a dragonfly as the main character.
We wrote the text on large construction paper with a sharpie. Then they worked with a partner to watercolor the pictures.
