Writing Buddies

When we started off this school year and learned that we were going to teach all 2nd graders (We've taught 1-2 multi-agers together for 15 years.) we thought we would have a class full of writers! Writing at the beginning of the school year for 1st is SO different than beginning 2nd...so we thought we would be editing and publishing right away.
But we were wrong.
We had some very, very bright and capable students that just weren't motivated to write.
And we write in our room EVERYDAY...so we had to find a way to reach these kiddos!!!
That's when we came up with the idea of "Writing Buddies"!☺
We put together a packet of writing frames that give our students the
main character(s) and the setting for a story.
Then they work with a writing buddy to create a story with a beginning, middle, and end.
We use Writing Buddies now once a week and ALL of our students are writing and they are even writing more in their journals now too...our plan worked!!! Our students are now excited about writing and they LOVE sharing their creations during Author's Chair every day.
Here are the procedures we follow each time we prepare to write with our buddies:
*sit at grouptime and introduce the main character(s) and the setting
*discuss and share
*do Think-Pair-Share: use a timer...1st min. everyone closes their eyes and thinks about events that could take place with the character(s) and the setting, turn to a partner at grouptime, partner 1 hold up 1 finger, partner 2 hold up 2 fingers, remind students that partner 1 will talk for the 1st min. while partner 2 listens, then partner 2 will share on the 2nd min. while partner 1 listens. then set your timer and let partner 1 share, then set your timer again, and let partner 2 share.
*after Think-Pair-Share, share and discuss again as a whole group
*review procedures about writing with a buddy: find a good spot for you and your partner, get started right away, share ideas, plan, write together, write the whole time.
(Each student has their own paper but they are creating the same story together.☺)
Writing Buddies has truly changed our students' feelings about writing. They get SO excited when they see us set out our Writing Buddies paper each week!

Our US Symbols & The Constitution

Teaching our students about our US Symbols & our Constitution and REALLY reaching Common Core Standards has been a great learning process for us
as well as our students!
Our students were very engaged and curious about everything we read and researched.
We LOVE that they love learning about events in our past!
One of their favorite activities was our
Statue of Liberty Craftivity!!!
(This craftivity is in our US Symbols & Constitution
 Mini-Unit...see below.)
We teach our students to make their craftivities without using tracers but they are available in our packet.

If you are still looking for products to help you teach about our US Symbols & Constitution,

Back in SEPTEMBER!!!

We had such a great time at our first Family Literacy Night this year!
We started off with our Apples, Apples, Everywhere book on the smartboard.
(This book is in our Johnny Appleseed Mini-Unit on our 2 Super Teachers store on TPT!)
We read AND we sang our book!!!
The tune to the song is Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Then we discussed the importance of reading at home everyday...and all of the different ways parents can read and help they child read at home.
While our students and families worked on making their books and apple pointers, we called them over to our snack table to make "Apple Smiles"! Then they went back to their tables and completed a writing frame about how they made their apple snack. We had a BALL!!!
Before our families left, we had a Book Giveaway and gave our parents a handout on reminders about how to help their child read at home.
We truly had such a wonderful time with ALL of our families...THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES FOR PARTICIPATING!☺

Our First Week Back!!!

So we've had our first full week back to school...and we have some news!
We are going to be ALL 2nd grade this year. WOW...really different for year #15 of teaming.
We knew there was a chance this might happen. Our numbers weren't high enough for another 1st grade section. But as our Best Friend Pete the Cat says, "It's All Good"!!!
We are so happy in our new school and we are still teaming. And honestly we have just as many levels in this 2nd grade double section as we would normally.
So we will just keep doin' what we do best...team-teach multi-levels.♥♥♥
(And we were going to cry like babies if we had switched the one group of 2nd graders we started with back to a new 1st grade group
because we've already fallen in love with all of them!)
Here are a few pics of our first activities!

This was our very first Work on Writing block...learning to build stamina!☺

AND...our very first Read to Self block. Their stamina was SOOOOO great!
They are READERS!!!
We were doing the Happy Teacher Dance and high fiving!!!☺
It's taken all week but we've read one-on-one with almost all 46 kiddos. We are getting their book levels individualized...a few more to do on Tuesday & we will be good to go!
Making our Groovy Friend...Pete the Cat! (no tracers involved)
And here are a few of the finished products.☺
We've really had the Best First Week Ever!!!
We have a super fun week planned for next week and some surprise pics to post...
